Book Presentation

The story behind the book

Voice over IP has a long history already. As an independent consultant and trainer, I held my first seminars about this emerging technology before the year 2000. Since then many improvements were added, like broadband voice communication or high-definition video. Some manufacturers have established themselves on the market, others have disappeared from the market. WebRTC is a newer technology changing the whole market.

Around 2014 I published the first version of my book “Corporate Telephony Strategies for Enterprise Customers and Organizations” to help you to define your individual telephony strategy depending on many different factors.

This year I published my little book “Selecting Video Conferencing Solutions“. It helps you to specify your requirements for video conferencing systems and services.

The latest projects on Unified Communications showed me that many people are dealing with this topic and the complexity is really high.

The book is written in very simple English for people from around the world. The readers should be familiar with basic computer and communication concepts to follow. I wrote the book for different groups of people.

Who should read this book

The book “Unified Communications – Buyer’s Guide” prepares you as a decision-maker, planner or system integrator of solutions or services to define a long-term strategy and selection criteria for systems and services.

Business owners: whether you are the owner of a large business unit or of a small one, you always have to decide what to do next or what to buy. And you have to rely on other people. The book gives you hints, what you or your employees or external partners like consultants should consider when you plan to implement modern business communication solutions. You may use the book for your own or give it as a gift to your employees or your business partners.

Decision-makers: strategic decisions have to focus on business advantages, use cases, and best practices. Not technical details but chances for future business opportunities and expanding customer services help to surprise your customers.

As a reviewer for another book stated: reading standards, for example, the Requests For Comments (RFCs), or data sheets focusing on specific solutions of vendors will not really help. Defining vendor-independent questions to be asked in a Request for Information (RFI) or Request for Proposal (RFP) will help decision-makers much more and leads to excellent strategic decisions based on fundamental data. The book suggests a lot of questions you may ask your vendor.

Planners, consultants: you have to consider impacts of technical choices to the future application and acceptance of the solution. Solutions have to be selected both on commercial, but also technical criteria.

The book lists examples of goals of realized projects. It gives advice how to save money by selecting an individual communications strategy for your business or your client.

System integrators: details on how to configure a solution may have great impacts on usability, quality of service, management, operational cost, and many other fields. I have seen many projects where solutions were built with less planning and decision effort but more of the type „trial and error“. They have lost sight of their goals. These projects were not really successful. The book´s goal is to help you with solution-independent know-how on how to plan and configure solutions to best meet the overall goals of your unified communications project.

Vendors and providers: the book informs you about requirements of your (prospective) customers. Considerations and planning for unified communications solutions for your customers are the main focus. You may use the book for your own sales, presales or technicians or give it as a gift to your business partners like planning partners, solution consultants, distributors or system integrators. Supporting the book helps you to make your company known.

By reviewing strategy definitions, data sheets, implementation guides, standards, websites and using my own experience as a planner and trainer I prepared the book to help everyone to define his individual unified communications strategy.

I combined theoretical know-how about technologies and standards, experience as a planner of solutions as well as my contacts to the market (vendors, system integrators, planners, consultants) to answer your questions in my book.
